The Box: A Video

Here’s Val on yesterday’s progress on The Box. And a little surprise view at the end.

For anyone who doesn’t know, Val is a ninja project manager. Add that to her love of construction and you’ll know why she’s in charge of this party. She’s already got a vision of what’s happening in weeks 4 and 5.

Tomorrow we should have electricity and I will be able to take pictures of the inside. The walls are going up fast.

Project: Next

It doesn’t look like much. In fact it’s less than it was yesterday. And that’s good news. Because we got the permit and demo has begun. There are no photos or posts from the permit process; nothing to see there. Just many visits (8, by Val, in case you’re counting) to a dimly lit office on Jefferson. Sigh.

So that was just prior. But this, this is excitement. Today we pulled down a junky old office space. And later framing will begin on the new walls.

New walls of what you might ask. This is our next project. It’s an old garage on East Greenbriar. And, if all goes well, it will be a live/work space in about 8 weeks. OUR live/work space to be exact. Yes, we’ll be moving. But just 2.1 miles to the east. And still in Oak Cliff. It will be our first move in almost 9 years! Big change from the days when we swapped homes every 1-2 years. This will also be our first renovation for ourselves in that time. So many details to consider! I can’t tell if it’s easier or harder to have yourself as the client.

So that’s the news for now. Oh, and it’s pet name is “The Box”. Here we go.

I’m a Sucker

That’s right. Me.I’m a sucker for Bastille Day. I love the nod to France right here in our own Bishop Arts backyard. I can’t help it…I find the drinks divine, the crepes scrumptious, the petanque intriguing. And we haven’t even got to the jaunty berets or the cute striped shirts that folks don (obviously).

Why would so many folks come out on what is usually a sizzling summer day in Texas? Sure, we have a vague, way-back Oak Cliff connection to France with the La Reunion colony. More importantly, our current-day party maven, Amy Cowan, loves an excuse to throw an excellent fete. And what a doozie this one is. For one night only, several local restaurants will be at booths offering French-themed foods. The crepes, by Oak Cliff Creperie, get top billing. Take my advice and arrive early, otherwise, you’ll be in line for hours. Wine and good drinks are always front and center. But what I believe makes the whole thing come together is the petanque court, right in the middle of the action. You can use the "boules" provided and do as the French do.

It really is the best event of the year. Don’t take my word for it, though. Come out and see for yourself. They sell out every year, so you’ll want to reserve your spot at www.bastilleonbishop.com. Fancy glass plus your first drink included. And all the petanque and "oui oui" you can stand. See you there!
